Evaluating ISO 9001:2000 Certified and Non-Certified Organizations in Brazilian Leather-Footwear Chain

Abstract

This study analyzes the Management Practices and Results constructs from several ISO 9001:2000 certified and non-certified organizations in the Brazilian leather-footwear chain in order to identify possible differences in performance between those and to determine the Motivation construct that led these organizations to attain the certification. To achieve these objectives, a research survey was made by sending out an invitation by e-mail to complete a suitable questionnaire on the Internet. We received 130 replies, 45 from certified  organizations and 85 from non-certified organizations. A validation process of the questionnaire was carried out. The factors extracted of the constructs presented positive and significant correlations in the certified organizations. These organizations also performed better in Management Practices and obtained superior Results than those of the non-certified
organizations. It is suggested that the non-certified companies in the Brazilian leather-footwear chain should develop a specific motivation to obtain the ISO 9001:2000 certification in order to improve their businesses. The outcome of the research favors the implementation of such joint policies for quality along the value chain to improve industry competitiveness.

Marcelo Hoss Almeida, UFRGS

Marcelo Hoss is graduated in Chemical Engineering at UFRGS
(Federal University of the State of Rio Grande do Sul) in 2004. He holds a
degree of Master of Production Engineering (2007). Currently, he is a doctoral
candidate in Production Engineering by the same University. He is also a
substitute professor at the Department of Production Engineering.

Carla Schwengber Ten Caten, UFRGS

Carla Schwengber ten Caten holds degrees of Doctor of Engineering
(1999) and Master of Production Engineering (1995) from the Federal
University of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and is at present
an Associate Professor at that University in the Post Graduate Program in
Production Engineering and Transportation (PPGEP). She is also evaluator of
the CAPES program (Coordination of the Capacity Advancement Program for
Senior Graduates), and peer reviewer to various Brazilian scientific journals.
She has experience in Production Engineering with specialization in Quality
and Product Engineering.

Mariliz Gutterres, UFRGS

Mariliz Gutterres is graduated in Chemical Engineer (1984) and holds
degrees of MSc. Enginner (1996) and Doctor in Chemistry by the Technische
Universität Bergakademie Freiberg and Leather Institute FILK, Germany
(2001). She worked as production manager of a tannery from 1985 to 1989.
Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering at UFRGS (Federal
University of the State of Rio Grande do Sul) since 1990, where teaches to
graduation and post-graduation courses, orients master and doctorate students
and co-ordinates research projects about leather technology and environment
protection.
