Economic evaluation of scenarios for manufacturing systems using discrete event simulation based experiments

Abstract

This paper aims to perform economic evaluation of scenarios for manufacturing systems via discrete event simulation based experiments. First, three simulation models were built to mimic three manufacturing cells from two companies. In these simulation models, there are eight, thirty two and sixty four scenarios to be economically analyzed. Then, the decision makers can choose the best scenario by selecting the highest net present value, according to a future predicted demand. The research´s results allowed the identification of an activity that should not exist inside the production process (an analyzed scenario). So, the simulation model gained credibility among the decision makers after it pointed out a 35% of increase in the current monthly output. Finally, this work is concluded by highlighting the role of the design of experiments to select the most relevant scenarios to be economically analyzed. This saves time, when there are a large number of scenarios.

JOSÉ ARNALDO BARRA MONTEVECHI is a Professor of operational research, discrete event simulation and economic engineering at the Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI - Brazil). Professor Montevechi is graduated in Mechanical Engineering (1985). He has a Master’s degree (1989) in Mechanical Engineering, from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering (1995), from São Paulo University and he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Texas at Austin (2008). His research includes discrete event simulation, optimization and DEA (data envelopment analysis).

Rafael florencio da silva costa is an Industrial Engineer graduated at Federal University of Itajubá, in Brazil. Nowadays he is a student of masters in Industrial Engineering at the same university. His research interest includes Simulation, Design of Experiments and Operations Research.

Fabiano Leal is a professor of design and measurement of work at the federal university of Itajubá (Unifei - Brazil). Professor Leal is graduated in mechanical engineering (2000). He has a master’s degree (2003) in industrial engineering, from the Federal University of Itajubá, and he has a PhD in mechanical engineering (2008), from São Paulo State University. His research includes discrete event simulation and process modeling.

Alexandre Ferreira de Pinho is a professor of operations research and management information systems at the Federal University of Itajubá (Unifei - Brazil). Professor Pinho is graduated in mechanical engineering (1995). He has a master’s degree (1999) in industrial engineering, from the Federal University of Itajubá, and he has a PhD in mechanical engineering (2008), from São Paulo State University. His research includes decision support systems, discrete event simulation and genetic algorithm.
