Strategy for the development of agricultural machinery: importance of patent analysis

During the product development, patents help identify new project opportunities and, if well analyzed, can reveal technical strategies in terms of how countries, companies, and universities link patents and product development. In the context of the agricultural machinery sector there is a complexity in the integration of data from patents with the stages of development conceptions. In this context, the article aims to present how the information obtained from a patent bank can be used for the development of agricultural machinery. As a methodology, the Systematic Bibliographic Review was selected to identify and relate strategies that add value throughout the agricultural machinery project. As a result, research has shown that the use of patent information can assist in the development of agricultural machinery from technical data. In addition, patents are characterized as a valuable source of technological information, as it is inexpensive and capable of feeding a company in its own research activity and in the development of new products. It is concluded that the information from patents, suggested as strategies in the model of agricultural machinery development, allows for managerial and technical decisions aimed at improving products. Finally, the research contributed to fill the information gap between patents and the development of agricultural machinery, a diffusion of data that, if well connected, can promote a competitive differential in companies.

Author Biographies

Franco da Silveira, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS

Doctorate in Production Engineering (UFRGS). Master in Production Engineering (UFSM), member of the Center for Innovation and Competitiveness (NIC). Graduated in Mechanical Engineering from URI (2015). He participated as administrator of the BAJA MISSIONEIRO URI Project in the year 2014, for the 12th BAJA SAE BRAZIL Competition - SUL Stage. He has developed studies on the Management of Product Development in Companies of the Metal-Mechanical Sector, through a research project and Course Completion Work (TCC). His research interests include: product development management, ecodesign, sustainability, service development process, knowledge management and innovation, and project management. He has experience in Mechanical Engineering related to the areas of Fleet Management and Work Safety audits.  

Filipe Molinar Machado, Federal University of Santa Maria – UFSM

Doctorate in Agricultural Engineering by UFSM in the area of ​​agricultural mechanization (since 2015). Master in Production Engineering from UFSM (2014) and graduated in Mechanical Engineering from URI (2007). Since 2011, he is a Professor at the Department of Engineering and Computer Science at URI, Santo Ângelo campus, teaching and advising in the engineering degree course. Since 2009, he has been a state public servant with the position of Criminal Expert, Mechanical Engineering, at the General Institute of Expertise (IGP-RS). Since 2015 he has been a professor of the URI-Baja Team. Between 2006 and 2007, he was the creator and leader of the Aeromissions Team, to participate in the SAE Brazil AeroDesign Competition. Between 2005 and 2006, he acted as a student in a scientific initiation project with remunerated scholarship (PIIC / URI). Winner of two research prizes in Scientific Initiation (CRICTE-2006 and SIIC / URI-2006). He is interested in research in subjects: scientific writing, product development management, service development management and project management. Researcher of the Applied Engineering Group for Industrial Processes (GEAPI / URI), Technical Systems Projects Laboratory (LPST / UFSM) and Research Group on Engineering Education (GPEE / URI).

Leonardo Nabaes Romano, Federal University of Santa Maria – UFSM


Fernando Gonçalves Amaral, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS

He is a civil engineer, specialist in ergonomics from the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) - Belgium (1991), master in ergonomics from UCL (1992), master in ergonomics from École Pratique de Hautes Études - Sorbonne - France (1995), PhD in ergonomics by Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) - Belgium in 1999. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and a master's and doctoral advisor in the Post-Graduate Program in Production Engineering. He has published several articles in specialized periodicals and works in annals of events. He has supervised more than 60 completed Master's Dissertations, 11 PhD theses, and has conducted several course work in the areas of Production Engineering, Work Safety, Collective Health and Administration. He works in the area of ​​Production Engineering, with emphasis on Ergonomics, conducting research in several companies in the southern region of Brazil. In its Lattes curriculum, the most frequent terms in the contextualization of scientific, technological and artistic-cultural production are: ergonomics, DORT, health, working conditions, costs, evaluation, safety, work organization, environmental management, quality and services, agility in projects and design management. Currently coordinates NECSSO? Training Center in Ergonomics, Occupational Health and Safety linked to the LOPP (Laboratory for Optimization of Products and Processes) of the PPGEP of UFRGS.  

Janis Elisa Ruppenthal, Federal University of Santa Maria – UFSM

He has a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Maria (1990), Specialization in Occupational Safety Engineering (1993), Master in Production Engineering (1995) and PhD in Production Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2001). Professor of the Engineering Courses of the Federal University of Santa Maria since 1996. She also works in the Graduate Program in Production Engineering at UFSM. He has experience in the area of ​​Production Engineering, working mainly in the following subjects: technology-based entrepreneurship and innovation, sustainability and work safety engineering.
